How to Prepare Your Skin for Summer: Expert Advice from a Dermatologist

As the seasons change, so should our skincare routine. To understand how to adapt it effectively, we spoke to Dr Nicoletta Banzola, who explained the essential steps for keeping skin hydrated, smooth and radiant.

Hyaluronic acid, hydration and sun protection are among the key considerations for anyone looking to restore the elasticity and radiance their skin may have lost during the colder, darker months.

Just as we update our wardrobe with the changing seasons, our bathroom cabinet deserves a seasonal refresh.

The ideal products combine intensive hydration with lightweight, refreshing textures. While suitable for year-round use, they become particularly appealing as temperatures rise and the skin’s need for hydration increases.

Choosing the right products, however, is not always straightforward. We therefore sought the advice of Dr Nicoletta Banzola, a medical doctor specialising in Dermatology and Venereology and Medical Director of the iDutùr Outpatient Medical Centre in Faenza, in the province of Ravenna.

What skin concerns might arise at the beginning of spring?

“Cold weather, sudden temperature changes and wind, combined with the smog and pollution of recent months, may have weakened the skin barrier, leading to dryness and redness.

“These conditions may also have contributed to a loss of elasticity and radiance, thickening of the skin and slower cell turnover.

“Harsh weather can cause superficial blood vessels to constrict, potentially reducing oxygen delivery to the tissues. When cell renewal slows, the skin’s surface can become duller and thicker.

“Cold temperatures can also disrupt the skin’s hydrolipidic film, the protective layer of sebum that helps shield the epidermis from external aggressors. As a result, the skin may appear thinner and more fragile.”

Which skincare products should we use as the warmer weather arrives?

“Adapting your skincare routine to the season is important.

“Summer brings its own environmental challenges, including high temperatures and intense sunlight, which can leave skin looking dull, particularly when it is already dehydrated after winter.

“Hydration is therefore an essential part of everyday skincare. It can be enhanced with hyaluronic acid serums and booster treatments that combine lightweight textures with ingredients designed to plump the skin, provide antioxidant benefits and enhance radiance.”

These are the qualities offered by ISDINCEUTICS Hyaluronic Concentrate by ISDIN, an intensive serum developed for those seeking deep hydration while addressing the early signs of photoageing.

Its ultra-lightweight water-gel formulation absorbs quickly, leaving a satin finish. Dermatologically tested, it is also suitable for sensitive skin.

What is hyaluronic acid, and what benefits does it offer the skin?

“Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide naturally present in the dermis, the layer of skin beneath the epidermis.

“Its principal characteristic is its ability to retain water, helping the skin remain soft, supple and elastic.

“It also has soothing properties, helping to reduce redness and support tissue repair.

“This is why it is included in numerous anti-ageing skincare formulations. By improving skin hydration and plumping the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it can help minimise visible signs of ageing.

“Hyaluronic acid is generally classified according to its molecular weight.

“Low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid can penetrate more deeply into the skin and may support collagen synthesis, while high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid remains closer to the surface, where it primarily provides hydration and lubrication.”

Can hyaluronic acid be too rich for the skin, or is it also suitable for oily and combination skin?

“There’s a common misconception that oily skin is more resilient and less susceptible to ageing, but that isn’t necessarily the case.

“Oily and acne-prone skin can be particularly susceptible to blemishes and residual marks.

“Exfoliating treatments are often recommended to help manage existing imperfections and prevent new ones. Hyaluronic acid can play an important role alongside these treatments by replenishing hydration and supporting the skin barrier.

“For minor blemishes such as spots, hyaluronic acid and salicylic acid can be a particularly useful combination.

“The former helps maintain hydration and skin suppleness, while the latter provides exfoliating and skin-refining benefits.”

As the days become longer and sunnier, is daily sun protection essential? How much sunscreen should we apply to ensure adequate protection?

“Hydration and sun protection are two essential, non-negotiable steps in any skincare routine.

“The skin should be protected from the sun every day, wherever you are.

“Exposure to ultraviolet radiation can damage the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer.

“It is essential to choose appropriate sun protection, using a sunscreen that provides comprehensive protection against UVA and UVB radiation, while also considering infrared radiation, visible light and blue light.”

Choosing a sunscreen with a lightweight, moisturising texture is important because the way a product feels on the skin can influence how consistently we use it.

The more comfortable and suitable it is for our skin type, the more likely we are to apply it regularly.

Fusion Water MAGIC SPF 50 by ISDIN is a facial sunscreen with an exceptionally lightweight texture and a silky finish, making it suitable for use under make-up.

Designed for everyday protection against UV radiation, whether at the beach or in the city, its oil-free formulation is suitable for combination and oily skin and is designed not to irritate the eyes.

It is also enriched with hyaluronic acid, providing immediate hydration to help counteract moisture loss associated with sun exposure.
